Professor Iain Hutchison

Professor Iain Hutchison runs (pro-bono) Saving Faces-The Facial Surgery Research Foundation and is Director of the world’s only National Facial and Oral Research Centre leading international studies to innovate and determine best treatment practice. He leads research initiatives in cancer and trauma surgery.

His “day job” is as an Oral & Facial Surgeon treating cancer and rebuilding the faces of people with severe disfigurement. He has been awarded all his specialty’s national prizes and represents them on many national and international committees.

He has developed and funded counter-intuitive projects improving public knowledge:

• The Saving Faces Art project charting the physical and emotional journey of patients undergoing facial surgery;
• Public events about stem cell research, face transplantation & tissue engineering;
• Schools campaigns using facial injury and mouth cancer to discourage binge drinking and smoking.
• The Saving Faces “Expert Patient” group who provide support for people undergoing the same treatment they had.
• His BMJ editorial led to the world’s first mouth cancer awareness campaign.
• His skills at demystifying medicine result in many invitations to lecture to lay audiences.
